Hotel Tricks

One good way of depicting the culture is to visit the temples that are situated outside of Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, including the magnificent Wat Tham Pha Daen, a wooded temple constructed over the shoulder of a hill with great architectural beauty, overlooking wide scenery and is located just outside town. It’s not far from the town by vehicle and is another place with quite a contrasting environment.

To get the best of the local food scene, visit the night market popping up in the heart of the city. Ask the bellboys for directions. This is the best place to sample a wide variety of authentic and dirt-cheap Isaan dishes. Look for ‘som tam’ (spicy papaya salad), grilled meat, and local sweets. It is an energetic and tasty evening activity.

A nice little trip from the hotel is the visit to the Kasetsart University Lotus and Waterlily Park located at the edge of Nong Han Lake. It includes an enormous pond of innumerable varieties of lotuses and waterlilies, crisscrossing boardwalks enable visitors to walk out over the water. It’s a pretty and quiet place, especially for taking photographs in morning light.

Last but not least is the sampling of indigenous local products of the area, known as shopping for ‘pha kram’, the indigo-dyed cotton at outlets. Really, it’s a traditional craft of Sakon Nakhon, where one can explore fine handmade scarves, shirts, and other textiles. All these items are highly recommended as being available in the Sakon Nakhon Indigo Walking Street market-that’s simply an awesome and authentic souvenir to recollect your trip.
